Did you know that farming is one of the most dangerous industries in the US. According to an OSHA publication farm accidents and other work-related health problems claim as many as 1300 lives and cause 120,000 injuries a year, most of which are preventable.

Now, in Vermont more women are actively farming than in the recent past. Recently a WCAX posting stated the number of female run farms has reached one thousand in Vermont. That's up 13 percent in the last five years and is the fastest growing sector in Vermont agriculture. According to the article the Vermont Department of Labor warns that women are at higher risk of accidents on farms for two reasons: They typically have less farming experience and because of the difficult physical demands.

This is a sobering thought. It should be kept in mind however that often avoidable farm accidents are not the fault of the injured worker. Sometimes they are caused by defective equipment or other dangerous conditions. In those cases there may be help available for injured workers to pay medical expenses, lost wages and even compensation for pain, suffering and disability.
