Christina ColeMarch 16, 2007 5:37 AMA 57-year-old man was killed in a fatal car accident yesterday when he crashed into the back of an illegally parked tractor trailer on a Thruway rest area exit ramp, said state police.
The man's car drifted over from the southbound lane onto the ramp shoulder and slammed into the truck, just before 5am. His Chevy was wedged beneath the tractor trailer. Due to the fatality, the Thruway Authority said yesterday, that they will be working with police to re-examine the road.
The truck involved in the car crash was parked on the shoulder start of the exit, an area reserved for emergency parking only, according to police. The truck driver was ticketed for illegal parking. There were no skid marks present from the car leading into the crash.
The driver, an independent owner-operator, was delivering ice cream from Vermont to Virginia and had parked his truck on the shoulder at 1am. There is indeed a tractor-trailer rest area but all the spots were filled.
There are no witnesses to the crash. Investigators are waiting on accident reconstruction, his autopsy and blood test results to help determine the cause of the accident. This is the second fatal crash this week.
